Let’s Face It July 12, 2016
I’m embarrassed to tell you how many times I suffered a severe sunburn as a Florida teenager. They say when you fly too close to the sun, you’re going to get burned, but neither burns nor blisters could deter me from my vain attempt to earn a summer tan.
I wisened up after losing track of how many patients, friends and family members have had skin cancers and pre-cancers removed from their bodies. Is my daily skincare routine even effective enough to keep me safe from the damage that has already been done?
That’s why I love having Mellony around. Look at her glowing in the California sunshine on her recent vacation (while wearing sunscreen, of course)!
For those of you who missed it, Mellony Ritchey is our Holistic Skin Care Specialist and she knows a thing or two about your Florida skin.
After chatting up Mellony the other day about my skin concerns, I realized that my daily application of sunscreen on my face is preventative at best. There are a few more simple things I can be doing everyday to help repair my skin from the damage of sun and stress.
And since it would be mean of me to keep this information to myself, I will share it with you. If you are a sun bunny who wants a simple daily routine that will help prevent skin cancer, reduce dark spots and smooth away fine lines on your face, then here you go.
Mellony’s Summer Season Skin Care Tips
You know those hard water deposits that build up on the glass in your shower, or around your sink? That’s exactly what happening on your face, but with dead skin cells. Simply put, exfoliation is the process of removing the outer layer of dead skin that’s keeping you from shining your brightest.
This is an important step in your skincare regimen because it helps your products penetrate more deeply. It also stimulates cellular turnover, leading to that fresh “dewy” look…not unlike that clean, sparkly shine on your shower door when you scrub away all those hard water deposits.
Exfoliation always intimidated me because I assumed that such a process could only be done with a $150 vibrating two-speed brush that comes in five different colors. Wrong. According to Mellony, you can effectively exfoliate your skin using a washcloth and warm water (see “Washclothing 101” right).
Once you’ve removed that dead layer of skin using gentle exfoliation, it’s a good idea to apply a topical vitamin C serum.
You’ve heard of vitamin C, right? It’s that essential vitamin needed for growth and repair of tissues in the body, including our skin. In the skincare world, it’s often referred to ascorbic acid.
Vitamin C = ascorbic acid. Same same.
As you apply the serum, you’ll feel your skin tingling as if those fine lines and wrinkles are smoothing right out (because they are)…as though your dark areas of pigmentation are lightening up (because they are)…as though the collagen in your face is working to heal and regenerate your skin (because it is). Unless you have acne-prone skin or you are living in a dark cave, a vitamin c serum should be part of your daily routine.
Now make no mistake: an effective vitamin C serums is not cheap. An effective one can range in cost from $25 to upwards of $100, but it will last four to six months if you store it in a cool, dark place with the lid tightly secured. Mellony considers Skinceuticals to be the gold-standard of vitamin C serums. A good mid-grade version is Devita-C Serum.
A rule of thumb: look for a serum concentration between 10 and 20%. A serum concentration that is too low won’t be effective. If it’s too high, it can cause skin irritation.
Wear sunscreen. We all know this, right? Well here’s some information to accessorize what you already know about this age-old mantra:
1. Use a minimum of SPF 30.
2. Don’t forget your chest and neck.
3. Re-apply every two hours.
Don’t worry!! Sunscreen will not keep you from obtaining that golden sun-kissed glow. You can still tan while aging gracefully and without skin cancer, I promise! A good sunscreen will protect you from untimely aging as well as other damage done by those hot Florida UV rays.
